Makeover. After eight years in the home, it was time for a makeover. It was a busy summer (and then some) as every room was touched. Here's a quick list of the projects: new windows in the back, a whole-house audio and video system, interior painting, window coverings, wood laminate flooring downstairs and carpet upstairs, fireplace tiles/doors/mantel, kitchen appliances and furniture. (Summer 2003)

RV Storage. Pat spent a lot of long weekends in the summer of 2002 preparing the house so that we could bring our new RV home. Demolition (block wall), construction (gate, concrete, utilities, etc.) and landscaping were just a few of the many projects (see 20031206-211 for the details). Having the fifth wheel alongside the house really makes it convenient for getting ready for and returning from trips. It's also come in handy as another set of beds for visitors. Fortunately, I (Pat) have not had to use it yet :-) (Summer 2002)

Playroom. This project took a long time to get off the drawing board, especially since Pat was planning on doing the majority of the work. The play room is a partial garage conversion that changed an L-shaped three car garage into a standard two car garage plus a bonus room. To let in light and provide better access to the yard, Pat installed double-hung windows and French doors. He also enclosed the hot water heater and added shelves for Kathy to store her Creative Memories products. (Jan - Jul 2000)

Playhouse. After spending 1-1/2 years in Washington DC, Pat and his neglected tools needed a project to work on. What better than a playhouse for Sydney? Pat designed the playhouse around an existing 11- by 14-ft concrete slab in the corner of the yard. It is simple 2x4 construction, T1-11 siding, semi-clear corrugated roof panels (to allow daylight inside) and three "scratch and dent" dual pane vinyl casement windows at $25 each ($280/ea if new). Baby Room Closet. I ripped out the typical sliding wardrobe doors and rebuilt the closet with drawers, shelves, a large cabinet and room for hanging clothes. Now the space can be used more efficiently. (Jul - Aug 1997)

Built-in Entertainment Center. I built an entertainment center into an alcove under the staircase. The layout of the room and the cabinet, which changed after discussions with other net citizens, are discussed. A problem with my original cabinet design was the use of ported speakers in a zero-clearance cabinet. This problem was resolved by upgrading my existing system to a subwoofer/satellite speaker system. (May - Jun 1997)

Glass Shelves. There was a small alcove in the master bedroom that we really didn't know what to do with. So that Kathy would have a place to display some of her knicknacks, I built in a small base cabinet and installed three 1/4- by 20- by 32-in glass shelves above it. For display lighting, I also installed a pair of 20-watt halogen lights with a hidden touch-sensitive switch. (Jan 1997)

Guest Room Closet. The guest room closet was drafted into service as a computer desk and work area. Bi-fold doors and a movable L-shaped work surface were installed. (Jul 1996)
